The community is comprised of Old and New Kasigluk, and the combined population of approximately 500 receive power from a wind-diesel power system operated and owned by the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC). AVEC's power system incorporates a modern diesel plant and three Northern Power Systems Northwind 100 wind turbines.

The people of Kasigluk rely heavily on subsistence activities and commercial fishing, and poor fishing over the past few years has affected the local economy and underlined the importance of stabilizing energy prices.
