IEEE1547 and Distributed Wind in the New Wind Vision: An ASES Wind Division Webinar

The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) Wind Division webinar featured two presentations. Aaron Godwin, ASES Wind Division vice-chair, facilitated.

Robert Preus of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) presented the new context of IEEE1547, which includes distributed generation as a significant factor. Preus is the technical lead for distributed wind energy at NREL and founder of Advanced Renewable Technology, which provided training, engineering, and certification support for small wind manufacturers. He has 27 years of experience in wind energy.

Alice Orrell of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory discussed how distributed wind will be included in the Department of Energy's (DOE's) new Wind Vision. The DOE Wind Program, in close cooperation with the wind industry, is currently revisiting the findings of the 2008 20% Wind Energy by 2030 report to develop a renewed vision for U.S. wind power research, development, and deployment. This effort includes a characterization of industry progress and how recent developments and trends impact the 2008 conclusions, a discussion of the costs and benefits to the nation from more wind power, and a roadmap addressing the challenges to achieving high levels of wind (land-based utility-scale, offshore, and distributed) within a sustainable national energy mix. Orrell is an energy analyst who provides renewable energy assessments and wind power project development support for Department of Defense clients and distributed wind market research and analysis for DOE.
