Energy Works Michigan is a non-profit technical resource that was awarded a $3.5 million grant by the Michigan Public Service Commission to administer the Michigan Renewable Schools Program, a 2-year project bringing energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements and education to multiple public and private K-12 schools throughout Michigan.

The Michigan Renewable Schools Program provides four resources.

  • Energy Efficiency Program

This is a free program for Michigan K-12 schools. Selected schools (currently 40 openings) will receive detailed energy audits, identified cost-effective improvements, and an Energy Action Plan. Schools can save 10-30% off annual energy bills.

  • Renewable Energy Program

This program will coordinate the installations of small-scale educational Solar PV and/or Wind systems at 23 Michigan K-12 schools. The Solar PV and Wind systems are intended to demonstrate energy technologies, raise public awareness, and educate the next generation.

  • Post-Secondary Program

Faculty and students from post-secondary institutions will provide in-classroom, mobile classroom and/or auditorium presentations at high schools participating in the Michigan Renewable Schools Program. High school students will be encouraged to seek energy efficiency and renewable energy training opportunities available in their region. Energy Works Michigan has partnerships with Michigan institutions that offer green jobs training.

  • Educational Resources

Energy Works Michigan is developing lesson plans for K-12 schools on energy efficiency and renewable energy for the Michigan Renewable Schools Program. Lesson plans will be aligned with Michigan state standards, designed with a Michigan focus, and are free to download from its Web site. It will provide Professional Development Sessions and other recommended resources to help educators integrate these topics into their curricula and schools.
